Latin American Artists: From 1785 to Now

An essential survey showcasing the work of more than 300 modern and contemporary artists born or based in Latin America. Latin American artists have gained increasing international prominence as the art world awakens to the region’s extraordinary art scenes and histories. In an A–Z format, this volume introduces key artworks by 308 artists who together demonstrate the variety and vitality of artwork being produced. The book focuses on those born in, or who have lived in, the 20 Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking regions of Latin America, featuring both historic and living artists – those celebrated internationally and others less well known outside their native countries. To navigate this diversity, the graphic design uses typography as a vehicle to comment on this broad visual culture. A special typeface was created for the cover, functioning as both text and image, incorporating alternate letters and decorative elements inspired by popular imagery shared across these countries.
